Huskies pick up conference win over Ball State

DeKALB — Men’s tennis picked up its second Mid-American Conference win of the season Sunday with a 5-2 win over Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. The first time these teams matched up this season NIU fell 2-5 to the Cardinals.

First-year Mikko Malinen and sophomore Victor Spolidorio fell to seniors Marko Guzina and Nemanja Guzina for the second time this season. The match was played close with a final score of 5-6.

First-year David Pata and junior Bor Schweiger Muzar defeated senior Tom Carney and sophomore Thibault De Negri 7-5, for the second time this season. The Huskie win brought the fight for the doubles point to an even draw.

Seniors Eric Marbach and Erich Schuette claimed their victory and the doubles point for NIU over sophomore Chris Adams and senior Conner Andersen 7-5, giving NIU the early lead heading into singles play.

Spolidorio claimed the first singles victory of the day over Carney in two sets, both going 6-4.

Junior Shao-Yu Yu won his singles match against Anderson, pulling of a come-from-behind victory after falling 3-6 in the first set. He rallied in the final two going 6-0 and 6-2.

Malinen sealed the deal for the Huskies, giving them the overall meet win after defeating Adams. Their match was decided in two sets, 6-1 and 7-6.

Pata earned the final point for NIU with a win over Nemanja in a comeback win. Their match went into three sets, going 6-7, 6-3 and 7-5.

The two points scored by the Cardinals came from De Negri who defeated Muzar in three sets, going 1-6, 6-2 and 6-4, and Marko who defeated Marbach in three sets, going 4-6, 6-4 and 7-6.

With the win, NIU’s record returns to even at 10-10, putting them 2-3 in MAC play. The Huskies will return to the court 10 a.m. Sunday in Buffalo, New York for a conference matchup against the University of Buffalo.
