DeKALB —  A hat-trick from transfer first-year Enrique Banuelos led the Huskies to a 3-0 win Friday over DeKalb County United in the first DeKalb Derby.

Banuelos needed only one period to paint the scoresheet. His first goal came six minutes into the match. The transfer from University of Virginia added his second at the 14-minute mark before closing out his tally with a third goal just five minutes before the first period’s final whistle.

The match was conducted on a three-period format with each period being 30-minutes long.

Head Coach Ryan Swan told NIU Athletics he was happy with the results of the match. Swan said he was pleased with the way DeKalb promoted the derby, and hopes for more.

“I think it was a good start for this rivalry,” Swan said. “We came out and had a fast start to the game, there was some quality in there, but DeKalb County gave us a good game.”

The following two periods went scoreless before NIU took the win. The Huskies concluded their spring calendar with a 4-0-1 record.
