DeKALB — The 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships wrapped up over the weekend where redshirt first-years Bryce West and Brit Wilson grappled in their first national tournament.

Although the Huskie pair struggled throughout the tournament, West posted a win in his first national spotlight, finishing the tournament 1-2. Wilson competed hard, but came out empty-handed going 0-2.

In the first round, West faced University of Iowa sophomore Spencer Lee.. Lee proved too much to handle as West lost 0-18. The Hawkeye went on to take 1st place against University of Virginia junior Jack Mueller  to retain his title in the 125-weight class.

West went on to face Bloomsburg University junior Willy Girard.. The Huskie took care of Girard in 10-7 decision victory. West closed out his weekend with a 2:54 pin defeat against  Iowa State University redshirt-sophomore Alex Mackall.

West finished the year with a 16-16 record including a 2-5 record in regular season conference play, a third place finish in the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Champions and a trip to nationals.

In his first match of the tournament, Wilson battled Naval Academy junior Spencer Carey. . The Huskie fought hard but dropped a decision 5-10 bout to the Midshipman.

Wilson then faced Rutgers University redshirt-junior Joseph Grello in his final match, losing to the Scarlet Knight 1-10.

Wilson finished his first official year competing for NIU with a 25-7 record including 6-1 in regular season conference matches. The Huskie took second-place in the MAC tournament.

Nationals were the last appearance for the Huskies ultimately closing out the 2018-19 campaign for NIU wrestling. The Huskies finished the year with room to improve on their 8-10 record.
