Screen Actors Guild Awards are right around the corner

The 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards is next up in the seasonal parade line of award shows. The expedited two-hour show will honor 13 winners from their respective film and television categories this Sunday, Jan. 27.

Nominations range from individual actors to casts and stunt ensembles. The SAG Awards typically predicts success in the Oscars, however there are always exceptions, according to the Associated Press.

The continued popularity of Netflix series is evident in the number of notable nominees for this year, leading the television categories with a hefty 15 nominations. Netflix TV series “Ozark” and film “A Star is Born” share the honor of four nominations each.

Emily Blunt is nominated twice for leading actor in “Mary Poppins Returns” and again for supporting actor in “A Quiet Place.”

Missing entirely from SAG’s list of nominations but present in the Oscars is Netflix’s “Roma,” as well as “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

SAG actors also have a tradition of telling their personal, emotional backstories as they claim their award, ending with the phrase “I am an actor.” These speeches emulate Angela Lansbury’s 1995 opening speech to the first SAG Awards show, according to sagawards.org.

Hosted by comedian Megan Mullally (“Will and Grace”), the award show will be broadcasted live at 7 p.m. on TNT or TBS this Sunday.
