Biopic brings justice to The Notorious RBG

Felicity Jones impressively took on the role of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in “On the Basis of Sex,” which was released on Dec. 25 and became available everywhere Friday. While being the first biopic on Justice Ginsburg, the film was released only seven months after the critically acclaimed documentary “RBG.”
From the opening scene Jones stands out as a determined female as she heads into her law school course where she is surrounded by crowds of men in suits.
Jones demonstrates her character’s passion, which shines through as she battles against ignorance to fight gender discrimination. She pushes back when Harvard Dean Erwin Griswold, played by Sam Waterston, believes women should be more thankful that they have the privilege to be enrolled in Harvard Law School.
As Ginsburg learns that her husband Marty, played by Armie Hammer, has cancer, she pushes through an arc of depression. She attends her husband’s classes and types his papers as he battles this relentless illness.
This story shows how Ginsburg found her ability to speak out against gender discrimination in a tax code case against a man, Charles Moritz, played by Chris Mulkey, in the early 1970s. Jones played the role spectacularly as she shows her courage to stand up for Charlie’s rights in an environment where she isn’t seen as an equal.
The character development stands out as Ginsburg proves herself in a culture dominated by misogyny. Although she fails to practice law due to her gender, Ginsburg pushes through all the people who told her she would fail, such as Griswold, and proves them wrong by taking on this influential case.
Ginsburg faces several hardships, such as deciding between staying with her family and continuing law school, but everything she comes across only makes her stronger and more determined to make a change in the world.
This film’s relevance could not come at a better time as it inspires people to speak out against injustice. The “Me Too” movement has encouraged people to stand up against sexual harassment and sexual assault, particularly in the entertainment industry following the downfall of Harvey Weinstein.
“On the Basis of Sex” remarkably shows Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her passion for the law with an incredible cast and inspiring story.
