When deciding how to clean your space, figure out whether the area is messy, or if it is dirty. Messy is the pile of papers shoved across your desk. Dirty is the increasing dust bunny population and the weird smell coming from the plate you keep forgetting to wash.

When your space crosses the line from messy to dirty, here are seven hacks to make cleaning easier.

Heat up a lemon to get rid of food spatters and leftover burrito smell in your microwave. Squeeze some lemon juice into a half cup of water, then place the lemon in the water. Microwave the lemon and water for three minutes and let sit for five minutes.

The steam will make it easier to wipe away food gunk, and leave a fresh, clean smell.

Instead of rushing to the store when you run out of glass cleaner, use shaving cream to clean a mirror. This will get rid of smudges, as well as prevent the mirror from getting foggy next time you take a hot shower.

If you don’t want to accidentally vacuum up a rogue earring lurking under your bed, put a sock over the vacuum cleaner attachment. While you’re vacuuming, this will pick up smaller items without sucking them into the vacuum cleaner bag.

When your cup shatters, don’t look in your closet for the dustpan or vacuum cleaner. Go to your pantry and dampen a slice of bread with water. Placing it over the glass fragments will pick up the glass without cutting your hands or feet. Follow up with a vacuum to ensure all the pieces are accounted for.

Take care of your garbage disposal by running cold water through it and use ice cubes in the disposal to sharpen the blades. Give the disposal a clean scent by feeding it sliced lemon peels.

Don’t spend money on a lint roller, instead use your rubber gloves to pick up animal hair from your clothes, couches or bed. Get rid of the hair by running the gloves underwater and voila, you’re good to go again.

Baking soda isn’t just for cooking, it’s for cleaning too! Get rid of old couch stains by wiping them off. Sprinkle enough baking soda to cover the stain and let sit for 20 minutes. Vacuum off the baking soda for a brand new couch.
