Gymnastics opens season with intrasquad scrimmage

The gymnastics squad put on a show Friday with its annual preseason Red-Black Intrasquad Meet held at Victor E. Court.

The red team defeated the black team, 188.70-188.45, in the incredibly tight contest.

Helping the red team to victory was senior and reigning MAC Specialist of the Year Anna Martucci. Martucci looked as though she hadn’t lost a step on her renowned floor exercise; she posted a 9.80 on her best event of the evening.

“I tease [Martucci] all the time that she won MAC Specialist of the Year last year because she did two events; she’s breaking into other events now so she won’t have the luxury of being a specialist anymore,” Head Coach Sam Morreale said. “It’s exciting and she is in [top] form, but that’s Anna.”

With the new season approaching, Morreale is hoping to fill the spots of departing seniors like Ashley Potts and Katherine Prentice, both of whom participated in every event last season.

With that in mind, the Huskies’ star Martucci is looking to step up from a specialist to an all-rounder this season. She topped the scores for both the floor exercise and balance beam.

Anna wasn’t the only Martucci to impress; her sister Nina recorded the high score on the vault for the black team with a 9.70.

First-years Morgan Hooper and Tara Kofmehl were impressive in their first appearances with the team.

Hooper led the scoring on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.80. Kofmehl posted impressive scores on the vault, balance beam and floor exercise, scoring at least 9.65 on each event.

“Some of the [first-years] handled it really well,” Morreale said. “Some of the younger [gymnasts] did multiple events. So someone like [Hooper] did really well on two of the four events but struggled on the other two. Not they were horrible, they just weren’t as good. Honestly, that’s what I’m looking for: the [first-years] to keep moving forward.”

The Huskies’ season officially begins Jan. 4, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, when the team competes in a quad meet. The time of the meet has yet to be announced.

“I’m super happy with the depth,” Morreale said. “We’re ready for the season in a lot of places. Nerves hit us a little bit in other places. It’s good to get everyone in here with people watching, cheering and judges [watching]. It kind of changes the psyche and now we have this to pull from.”
