The Huskies women’s golf team took home the victory Tuesday at the Redbird Invitational in Normal by 17 strokes.

Senior Brielle Ward finished first among all competitors for the second time in her career, finishing at four under par over 54 rounds.

“The girls came out to play and they’re firing on all cylinders,” Head Coach Kim Kester said. “We had a lot of birdies; it was great to see.

NIU tied the school record low for a 54-hole event at 882, originally set in the Sept. 2015 Cardinal Classic at Ball State.

Sophomore Lauren Ingle finished in third place after shooting one over par while senior Lexi Salberg shot six over par to finish in sixth place. Sophomore Sofia Gomez Enriquez Riart finished seventh after shooting a career best seven over par.

“The course set up well.” Kester said. “We’ve seen a wide range course before. It just showed that they worked hard over the summer, and they were ready to go this season.”

The Huskies take part in the Mary Fossum Invitational 8:30 a.m. Friday at Forest Acres Golf Club at Michigan State in East Lansing.

“We’re playing a field a lot tougher than what we just saw at ISU,” Kester said. “Michigan State is hosting our regional this year, and we have a lot of former champions in the field. We’re going to be playing ten of the top 15 teams in the country, so it’s going to be a good test for us. We’re excited to play some of these teams and show them what we’re made of.”
