Pair of NIU gymnasts awarded
March 9, 2018
Senior gymnast Ashley Potts and junior gymnast Anna Martucci were named this week’s “Gymnast of the Week” and a “Specialist of the Week” Tuesday. This is Potts’ third time claiming this award and Martucci’s fourth.
“We’ve become very accustomed and used to it here,” said NIU head coach Sam Morreale, according to NIU Media Services. “It’s just really nice to see them hit when it matters.”
Martucci recorded a 9.975 Sunday against Western Michigan, the highest individual score for an NIU gymnast since Margaret Mroz scored a perfect 10 on the same event in 1995.
Potts earned her award after a career-high 9.900 in the Huskies’ home win over Western Michigan Sunday.
“I can’t say enough about Potts,” Morreale said, according to a Feb. 5 Northern Star article. “She’s just amazing at what she does. Honestly, she did this stuff last year, it just took her a little longer to get here. She works her butt off every day, so it’s really good to see.”
The Huskies will compete in the State Championship Meet 2 p.m. Sunday against the University of Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State University and the University of Illinois in Chicago.
