March 4, 2018
The women’s tennis team struggled against Marquette University Friday and dropped its second consecutive match.
NIU dropped its second straight doubles point and couldn’t score more than one point in doubles competition.
“We played two tough teams in the past two weeks,” said Heach Coach Tanya Mahefu. “They were great opportunities for us to get better for UIC.”
Natalija Popovic and Fluer Eggink started the Golden Eagles off strong, limiting freshman Thisuri Molligoda and senior Evelyn Youel to just one point at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2, Milica Novakovic and Lesley Foe continued the pressure with another 6-1 victory over the freshman duo of Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko.
Paula Tormos Sanchez and Andrea Amortegui completed the doubles shutout against senior Abigail Dekkinga and sophomore Brodie Walker at No. 3.
Molligoda was shutout in her first set against Sanchez but forced her to go into advantage in the second set and lost 6-0, 7-5 in the first singles match.
Popovic continued to rally for the Golden Eagles as she was able to knockdown Dekkinga 6-2 in the first set and shut her out in the second set of match No. 2.
Novakovic gave a replay of the first match as she shut out Potsi in the first set and was forced into advantage in the last set in match No. 3
Eggink pushed her team to four straight wins on the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Youel in match No. 4.
Amortegui notched the win in match No. 5 with both sets ending with a same score of 6-2.
Walker was able to put up points at No. 6, but it wasn’t enough as she fell to Foe 6-4, 6-3.
The Huskies will be back on the courts at 12 p.m. Monday against University of Illinois-Chicago in Chicago.
