Former Huskies aim for NFL spot

DeKALB — The football team held its annual Pro Day Wednesday at the Chessick Practice Center where senior and graduated players got to showcase their skills to NFL scouts.

Eight NFL teams were in attendance: Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.

Pro Day hosts different drills accentuating the players talents, such as the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, shuttle run and three-cone drill.

“They all looked really good and strong doing all of the test results,” football Head Coach Rod Carey said. “It’s a specific skill to train for the combine, and I thought they did a really nice job with it.”

The most notable Huskie players who attended Pro Day were seniors Shawun Lurry, Bobby Jones IV, Mycial Allen, Christian Blake, Chad Beebe and Shane Wimann.

Shawun Lurry, cornerback

“I had about three months of training, and I felt good,” Lurry said. “I have great ball skills, I’m quick, and now I just have to put it in God’s hands and when I get that call, I’ll be ready.”

Lurry is arguably the most proclaimed draft prospect coming out of DeKalb as he won the Jim Thorpe award in 2015 after leading the entire country in interceptions with nine.

The West Palm Beach, Florida, product has snagged 14 total interceptions in his four years at NIU, returning two of them for touchdowns.

The NFL hopeful cornerback posted an official 4.49 40-yard dash, 30-inch vertical jump and 9-8 broad jump Wednesday morning.

Bobby Jones IV, linebacker

“Overall, I think it was a pretty solid day,” Jones said. “These last 10 weeks I’ve been in the grind, and now I’m just looking forward to seeing the reviews I get for my performance today.”

Jones comes into the draft process leading all of the NIU defense in tackles in 2017, wrapping up 107 ball carriers.

Jones posted an 4.83 40-yard dash, 30.5 vertical jump, 9-9 broad jump and completed 19 reps on the bench press.

Mycial Allen, safety

“It was good being back with my teammates,” Allen said. “We were just laughing, joking and talking about how training has been going so I’m glad to be back.”

Allen was fifth on the team in tackles with 57, and picked off two balls which was tied for second on the defense.

The numbers put up by the King High School product were a 4.69 40-yard dash, 28 inch vertical jump, 9-6 broad jump and 14 bench press reps.

Allen played his final game as a Huskie in his hometown of Detroit Dec. 26 at the Quick Lane Bowl, where NIU fell 36-14 to the Duke University Blue Devils.

Christian Blake, wide receiver

NIU had a quarterback carousel in the 2017 season going through a rotation of four different signal callers.

Blake had an up-and-down season but posed as a consistent target for the Huskie offense.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound speedster caught practically everything thrown his way by former teammate Anthony Maddie.

Blake caught 41 balls, 442 yards and hauled in four touchdowns on the season.

The numbers put up for Blake were a 4.56 40-yard dash, 34.5 vertical jump, 10-6 broad jump and nine reps on the bench press.

Chad Beebe, wide receiver

“Before you get here even the night before you have a lot of adrenaline going,” Beebe said. “I thought today went great, I just wanted to do the best I could and that’s all you can really do.”

The son of former NFL wide receiver Don Beebe participated and was finally healthy in the 2018 Pro Day.

Beebe has gone through numerous injuries derailing his college career with the two most notable being an ulna and radius break and a hamstring tendon ripping off of his bone.

The native Aurora Christian High School receiver posted times of 4.65 40-yard dash, 32.5 vertical jump and 9-9 broad jump.

Shane Wimann, tight end

“I feel like I’m a versatile guy,” Wimann said. “I can play full-back, tight-end, tailback and I love blocking.”

Wimann, the 6-foot-4-inch, 250-pound tight end out of the Wisconsin Dells, led the Huskie receiving corps this past season with seven touchdowns.

In his tenure with the football team, Wimann contributed receiving 65 catches for 635 yards and tallied 17 touchdowns, which is the school record.

The NFL Draft will take place 7:00 p.m. April 26 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
