Blue Demons handle Huskies

The women’s tennis team was notable to click Sunday as it was shut out against the DePaul University Blue Demons.

“Nothing really went wrong,” said Head Coach Tanya Mahefu. “We went up against a great team.”

The Blue Demons didn’t give any room and beat the Huskies with at least a two-point lead in doubles competition.

Match No. 1 was the closest game of doubles. Senior Evelyn Youel and freshman Thisuri Molligoda couldn’t pull the win away from Patricia Lancranjan and Keisha Clousing.

The next two matches ended with the same score of 6-3. The Huskies’ freshmen duo of Lara Slisko and Maria Potsi fell to Aspasia Avgeri and Milica Tesic.

It was the same luck for senior Abigail Dekkinga and sophomore Brodie Walker as they weren’t able to get passed Marija Jovicic and Alina Kuzmenkova.

The singles competition was a lot of the same thing with the Blue Demons getting past the Huskies.

Clousing and Molligoda met up again in Match No. 1 and ended with the same result, with the Blue Demons on top with both sets ending with a score of 6-2.

Dekkinga had a rough match No. 2 with only scoring one point in the first set and got shutout in the second set to Lancranjan.

Potsi was able to put up a fight against Avgeri but couldn’t finish in match No. 3.

In match No. 4, Youel was able to put up a good first set against Jovicic but got shut out on her last set and fell in the match.

Slisko had no answers for Tesic as she fell 6-1 then 6-2 in Match No. 5.

In the final match of the day, Walker came up short, dropping this set 7-5 and the next one 6-2.

“We will be working on our singles competition for Marquette,” Coach Mahefu said.

The Huskies will be back on the courts at 5 p.m. Friday as they travel to Milwaukee to face Marquette.
