Illinois Department of Transportation cautions drivers about traveling Friday

The Illinois Department of Transportation is warning the public about the snow storm expected to hit northern Illinois Friday.
Driving should be avoided due to snow- and ice-covered roads, with limited visibility, according to a Thursday Illinois Department of Transportation press release. Delayed travel times are expected.
Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said IDOT has been preparing for the winter storm but urges the public to use good judgement when considering unnecessary trips
The National Weather Service has predicted snow will reach the western part of the state Thursday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Six inches of snow is expected to lay overnight and another six inches of snow accumulation is expected throughout Friday.
Portions of the state north of Interstate 80 are expected to be the most impacted.
“Before getting behind the wheel, please ask yourself if your trip is really necessary,” Blankenhorn said in the press release. “Consider taking public transportation or postponing your trip. If you must drive, be prepared to add plenty of extra time in your schedule.”
