The women’s tennis team is still undefeated as the home team as it added two wins Saturday against Valparaiso University and Eastern Illinois University.

“It was a great day for the team,” said NIU head coach Tanya Mahefu, according to NIU Media Services. “We got two wins against two extremely tough opponents.”

Saturday Morning – Eastern Illinois University

The Huskies were able to notch the win 4-3, especially because of the success they had in doubles matches.

“It was going to come down to the last match,” Mahefu said. “[I told them to] expect a battle out there.”

Freshman Thisuri Molligoda and senior Evelyn Youel started the day off with a 6-2 win over the Panthers’ Stella Cliffe and Grace Summers in match No. 1.

The teams of freshmen Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko took home a 6-4 win at No. 2 while senior Abigail Dekkinga and sophomore Brodie Walker won at the No. 3.

The singles matches were close for both teams as they split the matches.

Molligoda won her match against Cliffe at No. 1 in three sets.

The Panthers responded with a win of their own. Summers beat Potsi to give them their first point at match No. 2

Dekkinga was able to get the first set but dropped the last two sets 6-0 to lose her match at No. 3.

At No. 4, Emily Pugachevsky of the Panthers carried the momentum to defeat Youel and put Eastern Illinois up 3-2 in the overall match.

It was up to Slisko to tie it and give the Huskies one more chance to win, and she delivered as she defeated Abby Carpenter in three sets.

In the deciding match, Walker got the win for herself and the Huskies, knocking out Claire Martin in two sets.
