Hamel, Potts named scholar athletes of the week

Each week, NIU selects two students that represent the idea of “student- athlete.” These students receive recognition and are also nominated for the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week award.

Senior tennis player Louis-Philippe Hamel and senior gymnast Ashley Potts were named NIU Scholar-Athletes of the week of January 22-28.

Hamel off the court is a finance major with a 3.5 GPA from Drummondville, Quebec. On the court, Hamel went 3-0 in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Cardinal Stritch, a 6-3 6-1 win against Omaha and a 5-6, 7-6, 10-3 win against St. Louis. Hamel doubled with teammate senior Tom Hjertonsson for a 3-0 doubles record to finish a perfect week.

Potts is a sociology major with a 3.0 GPA from Oakwood Hills, Illinois. The senior captain tied for the sixth-highest all around score in school history at the “Beauty and the Beast” competition against Central Michigan with a score of 39.350. She was able to set a career high in the balance beam with a score of 9.900.
