Darius Rucker delivers everything country music could have wanted with his most recent album “When Was the Last Time,” released Friday.

His first single for the album,“If I Told You,” released July 5, 2016, set high expectations. The song features a slow paced tempo with swooning lyrics of love and an endearing meaning. Through his lyrics he describes the imperfections of love and people, with hope he can be loved with his flaws.

“If I told you the mess that I can be when there’s no one there to see, could you look the other way cause you love me anyway?” Rucker sings with a powerful and raw emotion leaving listeners longing for love.

The rest of the album is a fantastic follow up to to this single, providing a mixture of fast and slow paced songs to keep listeners entranced. The rhythm of each song seems to flow, creating a very cohesive list of tracks.

“For the First Time,” the first track on the album, sets the same relaxed and soothing tone as “If I Told You” which is consistent throughout the album. It is a classic country song with a rhythmic beat that leaving listeners tapping their toes.

“When was the last time you tried something for the first time,” Rucker sings with emphasis, making the emotions all the more believable.

Another highlight on the album is “Another Night With You,” a love song which fulfills the dreams of every hopeless romantic. It’s soft melodic beat paired with romantic lyrics of love sung in a thick tone will leave listeners feeling like home inside.

As well put together as this album is, it is not perfect. “Straight to Hell,” the seventh track, disrupts the rest of the album’s mood. Rucker collaborates with Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Charles Kelley on this track which seems to fall short for all of the artists involved. The rhythm is choppy and comes off rougher than the rest of the songs on the album, throwing off the smooth flow.

“Straight to Hell” seems like a shipwreck sailing along the ocean of songs Rucker has woven together so well. While it seems many songs on the album are love songs, “When Was the Last Time” offers a wide variety of tones and melodies to please every listener. Each track flows together with the next, like waves of musical purity, giving an overall ambiance of peaceful longing and country soul.
