Gun violence persists on and off-campus

DeKALB — Shots were fired at a black vehicle Saturday on the 800 block of Spiros Court, prompting an investigation into the second gun-related crime of the week.

The DeKalb Police Department and NIU Campus Police responded to the incident at about 3:30 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses reported two men at the scene, one armed with a firearm, fired off three to five shots at the vehicle, according to an Oct. 28 safety bulletin.

The targeted vehicle sped off in an unknown direction while the two men were seen fleeing the scene in a red vehicle headed east toward Annie Glidden Road.

The suspected shooter is described as a dark-skinned male who was wearing a black sweatshirt, jogging pants and gym shoes. The suspected accomplice was described as a dark-skinned male with dreadlocks who was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and red gym shoes.

NIU and DeKalb Police Department officials were not available for comment.

Aggravated Assault — Thursday

NIU Police Department officials responded to an incident involving a firearm Thursday in Stevenson Towers.

The altercation occurred on the main floor of Stevenson Towers at about 10:30 p.m. and involved three suspects, one of whom was carrying the handgun. Although the suspect did not fire the weapon, he displayed it during the incident.

The individual carrying the handgun is in police custody, and the other two individuals fled the scene on foot. NIU Police Department officials searched the residence hall and surrounding area but were unable to locate the other suspects.

The two suspects were described as males with black skin about 5 feet 11 inches tall with medium builds wearing dark-colored hats. One was described as wearing blue jogging pants, while the other was described as wearing a coat and jeans, according to an Oct. 27 safety bulletin.

NIU Police Department officials did not respond to request for comment.
