How to beat a homesick hangover

You wake up in the morning, and you just don’t feel right…something is off. You’re body feels stiff from your crummy mattress, your eyes are heavy from your roommate’s incessant snoring keeping you up half the night and all you want is a nice, home-cooked meal even though your pockets are too empty to even go to the nearest fast food joint.

The heavy feeling in your chest… that’s called a homesick hangover. It’s very common among college students, especially at the beginning of the year. Thankfully, you don’t have to live in misery. With these five home remedies, you’ll be feeling more like yourself and ready to take on the rest of the school year in no time.

Put on some music/movies that remind you of home.

Nothing too sad, of course, but sometimes watching a movie that reminds you of your friends back home can give you the warm fuzzy feeling you might have been having trouble finding in college. Listening to songs associated with good memories is another easy way to give you a boost and make you feel less alone.

Make plans and stay busy.

Talk to the cool girl in your English class and invite her out to coffee. Plan a fun outing with your roommates. Pick a weekend to visit some of your friends at other universities. It’s always good to have things to look forward to, so be sure to fill your schedule with some fun and not just schoolwork.

Call friends and family.

Phone calls are going out of style nowadays, but hearing the voices of your loved ones (instead of just receiving their emojis) can be the most comforting thing in the world, especially when you’re missing them. Odds are, they probably want to hear your voice too.

Study & be productive.

Remember that you’re here in college for a reason: to work hard, get good grades and gracefully move onto the next chapter of your life. Focusing on the things that are important to you will make your time in college feel less aimless.

It’s okay to be sad.

Everyone gets lonely in college sometimes, and it doesn’t mean you’re doing the whole “college experience” wrong. Let yourself be sad and know that some days are always going to be better than others. Hang in there. You aren’t alone.
