The women’s soccer team (1-1-1, 0-0 Mid-American Conference, allowed two goals in the second half to the University of Wisconsin Badgers and were never able to recover.

The Badgers defeated the Huskies 2-0, with both goals later in the second half of the game. The Badgers had 17 more shots than the Huskies.

Badgers freshman forward Cameron Murtha put Wisconsin on the board in the minute 58 when she volleyed in a goal after a Badger’s corner kick.

Junior midfielder Victoria Pickett doubled the Badgers lead in minute 71 after a ball was lobbed into the box and Pickett was able to finish it.

The Huskies were able to get one shot off and one shot on goal for the game, while taking two corner kicks.

“We had a good fight in the game today,” Head Coach John Ross said, according to NIU Media Services. “We need to relieve their pressure more during the second half and we couldn’t do that.”

Senior goalkeeper Amy Annala recorded four saves on six shots on goal.

Junior forward Taylor Sarver took NIU’s only shot on goal for the game. The Badgers won that category, recording 18 shots and six shots on goal.

Redshirt junior midfielder Delaney Loprieno, playing her third straight game at centerback, played the full 90 minutes along with Annala.

Ross said the Huskies were simply outplayed for the majority of the game and the Badgers were able to capitalize on NIU mistakes.

“Once our gaps in between lines opened up a bit they took advantage,” said Ross, according to NIU Media Services. “They are a very strong team and didn’t give us much margin for error.”

The Badgers took 11 corner kicks compared to two by the Huskies.

Both teams committed almost the same amount of fouls, with NIU committing nine fouls while Wisconsin committed 10 fouls.

NIU returns to action 7 p.m. Wednesday as they travel to Chicago to take on the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames.
