Sophomore men’s golfer Jordan Less qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur in a playoff hole after finishing the tournament three-under par (68-71-139) in the qualifying event at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.

Less carded six birdies in round one July 11, including four on the first six holes. Less finished with an even-par 71 in round two and tallied five more birdies.

With four players tied at a score of 139 after completion of play, Less and three other players had a playoff to determine who would advance. Less birdied the first playoff hole to claim one of the qualifying spots for the U.S Amateur.

After not seeing much action in the fall of 2016 season as a freshman, Less was integrated into the rotation after the holiday break. Head coach Tom Porten said Less made vast improvements in his game during that time.

“It was fun to see him progress from that first semester to having command of his game in a way we have not seen yet,” Porten said. “We’re very excited about his upside moving forward.”

In Less’ freshman season, primarily the spring season, he tallied a 74.42 scoring average, ranking him second on the team and second for freshman in the Mid-American Conference. Less is expected to be an integral part of the 2017-18 men’s golf team.

Less will represent the Huskies in the U.S. Amateur Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.
