2017 Victors Awards predictions

The Victors Awards is an event to honor NIU student-athletes, coaches and teams. The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The awards will be based on the 2016 spring and fall and 2016-2017 winter seasons. Over 20 different awards will be handed out, including the fans choice award, “Play of the Year.” This category represents a student who had the top play of the season

Prediction: Athlete of the Year (Male): Kenny Golladay, Football

Golladay was one of the only bright spots of the season. Golladay led the team with 1,156 receiving yards and 8 receiving touchdowns in 12 games. He is the first player in school history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. On Friday, he was drafted 96th overall in the third round by the Detroit Lions. It’s no doubt he is one of the greatest athletes to come out of NIU and will respectfully win this award.

Prediction: Athlete of the Year (Female): Ally Lehman, Women’s Basketball

Scoring 603 points this season and averaging 18.3 points per game truly made Lehman dominant in the Mid-American Conference. She led her team to the MAC Championship game and its first postseason appearance since 1995. This will come down between Lehman and Hope Schmelzle, senior indoor track and field distance runner, but Lehman will receive the honors.

Prediction: Coach of the Year (Male): Ryan Ludwig, Wrestling

Ludwig has been the wrestling head coach for six seasons, and this season was arguably his most successful. He coached the Huskies to break the record for team point totals at the MAC Championships in March. The Huskies also had five wrestlers qualify for the NCAA tournament, the most in the MAC Conference since 1985.

Prediction: Coach of the Year (Female): Ray Gooden, Volleyball

This award will be very close between Gooden and women’s basketball coach Lisa Carlsen. Carlsen has helped change the basketball program, but the volleyball MAC Championship will grant Gooden the award. It was the volleyball team’s first MAC title in 15 years.

Prediction: Newcomer of the Year (Male): Brock Hudkins, Wrestling

Hudkins is in his first season as a Huskie, posted an 18-12 record and was one of six wrestlers on the team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Hudkins went 3-2 in the tournament, beating the No. 17 wrestler in the country in that span.

Prediction: Newcomer of the Year (Female): Janae Poisson, Women’s Basketball

The freshman point guard sparked the bench this season, averaging 11 points on 40 percent from the field. Coach Lisa Carlsen has also named Poisson as a team captain for the 2017-2018 campaign.

Prediction: Huskie Comeback: Katherine Prentice, Gymnastics

After coming back from injury, Prentice set a career high in vaults, bars and floor routines and was also a part of the floor squad that set the team record with a score of 49.350. Prentice also was one of four Huskie gymnasts who competed in the NCAA South Central Regional.

Prediction: Play of the Year: Hope Schmelzle’s comeback win at MAC Championship in 3,000 meter steeplechase

Schmelzle made her mark in the record book with this play. With all of the pressure on her, this incredible play and feat not only secured a win for Schmelzle but a win in the MAC Championships. This will go down as the shining moment in her NIU career. The award is decided by the fans. Voting ended on Friday and was between four student-athletes, but Shmelzle arguably had the top play.
