Acclaimed local DJ returning home

DeKALB — From old-school hip-hop and disco to new-age techno, Lee Foss works his magic on the turntable. A world-renowned DJ and producer, Foss has been described as “one of the most talented forces in modern day dance music,” according to an April 6, 2016, DJ Magazine article.

Foss will hold his first hometown concert 9 p.m. Saturday at The House, 263 E. Lincoln Highway. Joel Kennedy, booking manager at The House, said he has had Foss on his radar for a while.

“I have been aware of [Foss] for quite some time, and he has been someone I have wanted to book at The House for a while,” Kennedy said. “We have had a lot of feedback that we need more DJs, so that gave me the reason to book him.”

Foss’s electronic music group, Hot Natured, is critically-acclaimed and is signed to Warner Music Group. Foss is the co-founder but is doing his first solo tour for his album, “Alchemy.”

Kennedy said ticket sales have been excellent, and he expects this to be one of the biggest events The House has had in awhile. In addition to Foss, DJs Jahamal Rainey and Roland Stone will also be performing.

Foss said he is excited to play a concert in DeKalb and possibly reunite with old friends as well as being excited to perform with some friends at the show.

“Jahamal and I are both from the area and grew up together,” Foss said. “Since this is Jahamal’s first big concert, I know many of our friends and family members are probably coming in support.”

Rainey was recently signed by Foss’s label, Hot Creations, and will accompany Foss on tour for his new album.

“Alchemy” is Foss’s first studio album, and he said the project took an extensive amount of time to create. Foss said “Blue is the Distance” is one of his favorite tracks on the album because of its significance. The song is based on a poem he wrote for his girlfriend.

“I had a song I was working on with Hot Natured, and we ended up not using it,” Foss said. “I took that original piece and used a poem I wrote for my girlfriend as the lyrics. It features a collaboration of Anabel Englund and Ali Love. It became so much more than I expected.”

“Alchemy” features other artists such as Alex Mills and Josh Taylor, and Foss said the album is very dear to him, despite how long it took.

“Sometimes you set out in a certain direction or a certain way and it doesn’t work,” Foss said. “I never gave up.”
