Vinyls celebrated for unique sound
April 20, 2017
DeKALB —Nothing beats the sound of a newly released vinyl record on the turntable filling the room with music that is unlike anything else. To celebrate this unique sound, Green Tangerine Records, 866 W. Lincoln Highway, is hosting a day of music Saturday.
National Record Store Day, April 22, is what prompted the celebration at Green Tangerine, said co-owner Justin Difazzio. 10 years ago, independent record store owners came together and dedicated an entire day to celebrating vinyl, according to recordstoreday.com, and now, stores nationwide celebrate the day.
Difazzio said Green Tangerine Records will have extended hours, live music for every hour, special, limited sales and free refreshments throughout the day.
“We are hoping to get our hands on some limited quantity albums that are being released that day along with many requested albums,” Difazzio said. “We know the albums are going to be a huge hit. We have already had customers ask about what we are ordering.”
Difazzio said not all the details are being released in an effort to keep most of the day a surprise for fans of vinyl who plan on coming in. Since this year is the 10th annual Record Store Day, Difazzio said Green Tangerine will be having their biggest celebration yet.
“We want to keep the details quiet for quite a few reasons,” said Difazzio. “The biggest reason being the limited quantity albums just in case we don’t get them in. I can tell you this, though: there will be giveaways, and our selections will be huge.”
The extended hours will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Difazzio said he hopes sales will be good and people will come in for a great time. If that is the case, Difazzio said he will keep the store open until the party ends.
Nick Sifuentes, a frequent shopper at Green Tangerine, said he can’t wait to add albums to his collection. He has shopped at Green Tangerine for years and said he loves the wide variety of vinyl the store offers.
“I have always loved vinyl and shopping at Green Tangerine,” Sifuentes said. “Whenever I have the spare money and time, I head straight there.”
Sifuentes said as soon as he bought his record player, he started a collection of albums and believes vinyl is a unique way to listen to music. Fans of vinyl are welcomed by Difazzio to stop by Green Tangerine anytime Saturday to enjoy the special release sales and the live music that will be available.
“You don’t get the same sound on a CD that you would on vinyl,” Sifuentes said. “A lot of the time too, vinyl has added content. I have one record where Vincent Price is telling scary stories, and you won’t hear that anywhere else.”
