Opposing ticket contests results

DeKALB — Student Association executive branch candidates from the A Better NIU Ticket submitted a letter of contest following the release of election results Wednesday.
The letter, which was submitted to the SA Board of Elections, outlines allegations of misconduct carried out by members of the NIUnited election ticket during their campaign.
“My goal is to make sure that all rules were followed during the election,” said Alex Forgue, former SA presidential candidate.
Amongst the allegations is the claim that a Snapchat geofilter was created by members of NIUnited and available to Snapchat users within buildings that housed polling locations.
A Better NIU candidates allege that this violates SA election regulations, stating that “no campaigning should be allowed within 100 feet of a building where a polling station is located,” according to the letter.
SA President-elect Rachel Jacob said the filter was created in hopes of promoting an increased voter turnout.
“We felt that it was just an additional part of social media,” Jacob said. “If you look at the election policy, there’s nothing in regards to Snapchat not being considered social media.”
