Frat prepares for a ‘positive’ move

DeKALB — As students prepare for the upcoming fall semester, Greek chapter Delta Chi is gearing up to move into a new house.

The chapter has been living in their current house, 908 Greenbrier Road, since 2011. Because their chapter has been growing, members have wanted a more spacious house. The new house, 901 Greenbrier Road, is the former Evans Scholars’ house. The Chick Evans Scholarship is a tuition and housing scholarship for golf caddies no longer provided at NIU, thus making the house available.

Fraternity Delta Chi was founded in 1890 and adapted to NIU in April 2010, according to their website.

“The reason why we took the house is because we’re growing as a chapter,” said Delta Chi President Dave Benissan. “We need a bigger space to fit everyone. It was an opportunity, and we took it.”

There are 53 active members in Delta Chi, up from 23 in fall 2013, and only about half of them have been able to live in the current house.

Matt Majka, senior computer science major, said he is excited about the new house because he will be able to live with more brothers and have a more comfortable living space.

“I’m looking forward to the fact that it’s a larger size, and we’ll be able to fit more brothers in the house as a whole,” Majka said.

Majka said the new house also has more bathrooms and more rooms to hold meetings. He said this will create more of a bonding experience in having more brothers in the house.

Members of the fraternity created a GoFundMe page March 1 to raise money for new Greek letters they plan to display on the exterior of house. The campaign has raised $1,034 of the requested $4,000.

Freshman marketing major Kevin Moore, who joined Delti Chi last fall, said the chapter is supplying furniture for the living room, but bedroom furniture will be provided. He said he is excited about having more study space as well as opportunities for recruitment.

“Not only is it going to impact numbers, but it will impact our image [on] campus,” Moore said. “Right now, we’re [in an] older-style house. With the new house, I think it’ll show a positive side not only for our fraternity but Greek life [too].”
