History of the week: Campus-wide closures are rare occurence

DeKALB | On Feb. 6, 2008, adverse weather conditions caused a campus-wide closure.

Although the closure might be a welcomed “snow day” for students, closures have academic and financial repercussions.

“When closures are cancelled, there are significant implications in the academic work of students,” Steve Cunningham, associate vice president for administration and human resources said. “A full closure definitely has financial implications on the university as well.”

According to a Dec. 16, 2016 NIU Today article, the decision to cancel classes need presidential authorization.

The university follows the NIU-Winter Weather Model for School Closures, which can be found here. This model is used as a guide in their decision.
