Netflix streams hero shows

Netflix has become popular in streaming superhero shows, two of which will combine to make “The Defenders” vigilante team — though, each fights for the common man.

“Daredevil”

First airing on April 10, the Netflix original “Daredevil” is well into its second season with Charlie Cox playing Matt Murdock.

An orphan and the son of a boxer, Murdock gains extremely heightened senses after toxic waste splatters his eyes while saving an elderly man from oncoming traffic. The aftermath forces him to live without sight; this loss, however, enhances Daredevil’s senses.

This show brings light to superheroes who are down to earth and are involved with combatting street-level and organized crime rather than ones who are involved with saving the galaxy.

With cameos of fully costumed Elektra and Punisher, the season ends with Elektra’s passionate speech about her beloved Matthew and how he struggles to be either just the Daredevil or a devoted neighborhood lawyer.

Students should watch this show because it depicts a beloved superhero with well-crafted villains and realistic problems of a hero in the city would face, as well as having to lead a second life and both fighting crime with the law and outside of it.

“Flash”

Forensic scientist Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin, gains his powers by being struck with lightning and immersed in chemicals, making him the fastest man alive.

Six months later, after waking from a coma, Allen is introduced to Dr. Harrison Wells, played by Tom Cavanagh, who mentors him and teaches him how to evolve with and perfect his new ability.

With a team located at STAR Labs, Allen focuses on saving others with his new potential while battling villains who have also acquired powers by the same explosion caused by a particle accelerator that created the storm in the first place. On top of that, Allen tries to keep his cocky attitude confidential from Iris West, played by Candice Patton, his childhood crush. “The Flash,” aired on The CW in fall 2014 and has been on Netflix for a year.

Leaving off on episode 23 of season two on Netflix, Flash is faced to fight another speed racer, named Zoom, who is of Earth 2.0 in a parallel dimension.

Students should watch “The Flash” because it is a great action- filled series with an impactful introduction story and relatable romance as well.

“Luke Cage”

Within the streets of Harlem, Luke Cage, played by Mike Colter, is a bartender by day and a serious vigilante with bulletproof skin at night.

Priding himself on defending the little man vulnerable to gangs, he fights oppression within his hometown. This series is a Netflix original which premiered this fall and is on its 13th episode of season one.

Cage is another down-to-earth superhero who focuses on crime involved in the streets. He uses his super strength and indestructible body against gangs in Harlem in a humble manner.

Students should watch “Luke Cage” as it is still new on Netflix and has realistic issues within city crime.

“Arrow”

Billionaire Oliver Queen, played by Stephen Amell, becomes stranded on Lian Yu Island where he is tested of not only his survival skills but how to become a superhero as well.

Although Queen does not have any powers such as “The Flash,” he constructs an arrow to help him endure the harsh wilderness of the island as well as perfects survival skills over five years.

With these strengths and his heightened intelligence, Arrow begins on his goal to stop crime within his hometown, Starling City.

Another local superhero who uses his skills to protect the common man, he wears a mysterious green hood while fighting drug dealers and mob bosses on the streets.

The show first aired on The CW in fall 2012. Netflix left off at episode 23 of season four and is planning on releasing season five near June 2017.

The Arrow has made a cameo in “The Flash” with two of its characters to intertwine the stories.
