History of the week: Roof blown away in high winds

By Northern Star staff

Six years ago today, a roof covering was blown off an apartment building, according to an Oct. 27, 2010 Northern Star article.

20 people living in the building had to find an alternative place to stay. The Holmes Student Center had previously been asked to use their hotel rooms to house students but they were not contacted in this event.

No one was injured but the incident surprised NIU Meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste who said the wind should not have caused such damage.

“The strongest winds were earlier [that week] and were at 47 mph,” Sebenste said. “It normally would take at least 60 mph winds to do such damage.”
