History of the week: Pizza stand generates controversy; approved

NIU Bill Wylie asked for the city’s permission to sell Pizza Villa pizza and pizza nuggets, according to a Sept. 15, 1986 Northern Star article.

Wylie requested a 30-day trial period to sell the food on a stand between first and second streets. The council had to approve the distribution of vending licenses, along with a $5 fee per day.

“There has to be some kind of costs with continually licensing, with monitoring,” Sixth Ward Alderman Steve Brodie said. “It’s ludicrous that were not charging anything.”

After consideration by the council, the fees were waived and Wylie was granted permission to run his stand.

Wylie claimed to get the idea from the fact that he was tired of his only late-night food option being hot dogs from outside the bars.

“A hot dog was too much for 2 or 3 in the morning,” Wylie said. “I always wanted pizza, so I thought other people would.”
