Top 5 trends from New York Fashion Week

By Sophia Phillips

The fashion industry’s top designers showcased their loud and bold collections for spring and summer of 2017 in New York Fashion Week, ending Thursday. Designers’ collections included updates to classic garments and elements from past decades.

Here are the top trends seen on the runways.

Patterns

Floral, stripes and plaid were patterns seen on the clothing in collections at New York Fashion Week. Stripes were highlighted by designer Alexander Wang as well as Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, Co-Creative Directors of Oscar De La Renta, who even featured paisley. Designer Tory Burch and Stewart Vevers, Creative Director of Coach, broke the taboo of mixing patterns by combining stripes with floral patterns.

Oversized jackets

Jackets were in the collections of multiple designers, many of them oversized. When the weather is cooler, breezy or rainy like it is in the spring, a jacket is essential and similar weather makes the oversized jacket trend wearable in fall. Alexander Wang, Tory Burch and designer Donna Karen of DKNY showcased oversized jackets in various styles including wind breakers and letterman jackets.

Collared shirts

Designers Alexander Wang and Vera Wang gave new life to the collared shirt, turning the classic style into a trendy one. Some of these shirts were updated in style with extra-long sleeves or longer dress length hems. Coach featured rounded collars in some looks, and Tory Burch showed many outfits with sweaters over a collared shirt.

Platform shoes

Many of the designers’ collections showcased platform shoes of all types. DKNY’s models all sported white platform sneakers paired with high socks, while Coach’s models wore platform, patent leather boots that were embellished with studs. Vera Wang’s collection featured platform heels, which contrasted other designer’s flat platforms.

Jumpsuits and rompers

One piece outfits are a staple spring and summer item, and the designers of New York Fashion Week added new elements to jumpsuits and rompers. DKNY’s collection featured oversized rompers and jumpsuits, many with hoods. Vera Wang’s collection showed rompers with off the shoulder, long sleeve and shoulder cut-outs, continuing trends popular from this summer and fall.
