DeKalb and NIU Police will fundraise for the Special Olympics Illinois by standing on a Dunkin’ Donuts rooftop on Friday.

Customers who go to Dunkin’ Donuts, 1101 W. Lincoln Hwy, will have the option to donate to the Special Olympics from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The goal is to be visible to the public, so hopefully by a police officer being on the rooftop, it’ll catch [the publics] eye,” said Kelly Sullivan, community relations officer for the DeKalb Police Department.

The Illinois Special Olympics provides training and a competition for 19 sports to more than 21,300 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The Special Olympics participants benefit from the exercise, develop sports skills and improve their self-esteem and sociability, according to a DeKalb Police press release.

Sullivan said this fundraiser has existed for 14 years and about 15 officers will participate.

People who donate could receive coffee mugs, T-shirts, hats and Dunkin’ Donuts coupons.
