Pass/Fail: Founders Library extends hours for finals; task force looks to cut from athletics
May 5, 2016
Pass:
Finals are approaching quickly for us here at NIU. It is about that time to stock up on Red Bull and get ready for long nights to be spent at the various study locations around campus. Some choose the convenience of Barsema and its 24 hour availability, while others prefer the library. With the spring semester drawing to an end, Founder’s Memorial Library is kicking into its extended final exam hours. For the week of finals, Monday through Thursday, Founders will be open until 2 a.m. Not only will Founder be extending its hours next week but it will also be the host to Newfoundland dogs and a coloring station.
Fail:
Division one athletics play a large role for providing scholarships for talented students to fund their education here at Northern. It is the Program Prioritization’s task to encourage sports to be more self-sustaining, essentially earn money to fund themselves. The program prioritization recommendations state that “the department should consider eliminating a male, non-revenue sport,” according to a May 5 Northern Star article. Now my question is this, why is the Program Prioritization force looking to cut a male sport? I’m confused as to why it must be a male sport that cut. The task force look at the non-revenue sports programs by attendance and cut program with the lowest turnout. The task force looks to make athletics more self-sustaining and I understand that. What I don’t understand, is why a male sport is being targeted when there are more NIU women’s sports than male, according to the NIU Athletics app.
