Health not defined by size, weight

By Samantha Keck

Many people do things based on opinions from friends or something they may have seen on TV. Whether its a new way to diet or exercise, we sometimes make these decisions based off stories we’ve heard. Here are some myths to put to rest so you don’t have to second-guess what is true and what is false about being healthy.

If you’re skinny, you’re healthy

This myth is one of the most common ones I have heard. Anyone can be healthy at his or her own size and weight whether they’re skinny or have a little more to love. Health can vary easily from person to person. Everyone stores fat in his or her body in a different way. Just because someone is skinny doesn’t mean they’re healthy and just because someone isn’t doesn’t mean they’re unhealthy, according to healthline.com.

People with darker skin don’t need sunscreen

No matter your skin color, you will always need sunscreen. It has been proven that darker skin actually needs sunscreen more, because the skin has higher chances of getting skin cancer, according to healthonline.com. If you have darker skin you may not need to put on as much, but it should still be applied.

If you eat late, you’re doomed to gain weight

For the most part, it’s quantity over quality. Not saying it’s okay to have an unhealthy meal but if you don’t eat as much and watch your portions, you should be okay. Also, if you’re eating late at night you’re most likely to be tired or stressed than hungry, according to health.usnews.com.

Eating too much sugar can cause diabetes

It’s not only the amount of sugar that you put into your body but it’s the eating of greasy foods, sodas, or any high calorie fat. Not to say you should go around eating all the sugar in every candy store, but having a little more than normal, with a steady diet of course, isn’t going to immediately put you on the road to diabetes, according to PinnacleHealth.org.

All of these myths are common ones that people believe to be true. Its important to know what is true about your body and what is not.
