Column: “This is what a feminist looks like” not for everyone

By Faith Mellethin

March 1 marks the beginning of Women’s History Month, a very important part of American History. I watched several friends post pictures wearing the ‘This is What a Feminist Looks Like’ sticker that they received from the Center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality.

As a female student at NIU, I recognize the importance of this celebration. However, I did not wear a sticker because I have not experienced any discriminatory acts in this way. I worry about walking around late at night, but I know many male students that do as well. Similarly, people may still think that drumline is male dominated, but when I joined an equal half of the participants were female.

NIU is a very diverse school with little sexual discrimination, but this month is about more than our University. I do intend to vote this year, and it is important to remember the efforts that took place so I am now able to do so. Whether or not you wore a sticker today, check out the Center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality to see the rest of the events they have planned.
