Letter to the Editor: SA does not hold closed-door votes
February 11, 2016
Not for the first time this year, as I pick up a copy of the Northern Star and glanced through, I find myself staring at incorrect language regarding SA procedures.
The article claims: “Four empty seats in the SA Senate were filled after a presentation by each candidate, closed-door discussion and vote.”
After the contentious debate between the Northern Star and the Student Association this previous semester about the legality of closed-door meetings and the responsibility of elected officials to keep information public and transparent, I challenge that we are not the only ones responsible to keep information transparent. It is the responsibility of the Northern Star not to publish false, inaccurate or misleading information.
Let us be clear that the SA Senate did not hold any votes during last Sunday’s meeting in a closed-door session, neither did we debate behind closed doors. The entirety of the meeting was open to the public. The only people disallowed attendance during discussion were the candidates themselves. Senators are more effectively able to discuss a candidate’s merits and make an impartial decision this way.
This is not the first time the Star has unintentionally misled the public, so please make it the last.
