Deadline approaching for student trustee nomination
February 29, 2016
A student trustee has yet to be nominated for Student Association Senate approval, with the deadline for SA President Nathan Lupstein’s nomination on Thursday.
In order for there to be a student trustee at the Board of Trustees meeting March 17, members of the SA Senate need to approve of a new student trustee by Sunday as this is the only SA Senate meeting remaining before the Board of Trustees meeting. Only two Board of Trustees meetings are left before the end of the spring semester.
Lupstein must nominate a candidate who then must be approved by a simple majority of the SA Senate during its Sunday meeting. Lupstein must propose a candidate by Thursday because the SA’s Rules and Procedures committee meets 5 p.m. Thursday and during this meeting, members must approve of a legislation to be put on the agenda.
“Rules and Procedures verifies everything on the agenda before it goes on the agenda, basically to verify that everything is procedurally sound,” said Timothy Brandner, SA sergeant at arms.
Technically, a candidate can be put on the agenda as late as Sunday, but they would not be screened by SA’s Rules and Procedures committee, and SA Senate members would not have time to do adequate background research on the candidate. Lupstein has not made the SA Senate aware of any interview process that has begun, Brandner said.
“I haven’t been sent any applicants for approval and, like our governing documents say, the Senate does need to approve of the person, so that’s the one thing that does concern me a little bit,” SA Senate Speaker Dillon Domke said. “If a [nominee] does not get passed this next meeting, then there’s no student trustee until we get back and meet on March 27.”
Former Student Trustee Raquel Chavez put in a letter of resignation to Lupstein in early January, which was made public on Jan. 21, Brandner said.
Because the SA has not before encountered an early resignation, the Board of Trustees passed an amendment to Article II Section 7 of the bylaws of the Board of Trustees, which approved of the SA’s new procedure to appoint a replacement student trustee at the Feb. 18 Board of Trustees special meeting.
The SA Senate could pass a resolution that pre-approves a suggested candidate, who would then have to be approved by Lupstein, but resolutions like this have never resulted in an appointee in the past, Brandner said.
Lupstein did not respond to a request for comment.
