Women’s tennis picks up first win of season

Women’s tennis (1-1) went toe-to-toe with North Dakota (0-2) on Monday, downing the Hawks with a 6-1 score line.

The Huskies dominated in singles matches for the day, winning five of the six matches. The No. 1 singles match featured NIU junior Adey Osabuohien going up against junior Lacey Sprinkel and sweeping the match. Osabuohien won the first set 6-0 and the second 6-4.

  • Adey Osabuohien (NIU) def. Lacey Sprinkel (UND) 6-0, 6-4.
  • Cristina Alvarez (NIU) def. Faith Lee (UND) 6-4, 7-5.
  • Abigail Dekkinga (NIU) def. Preethi Kasilingam (UND) 6-7, 6-4, 10-1.
  • Evelyn Youel (NIU) def. Aliza Deming (UND) 7-5, 6-0.
  • Meghan Montgomerie (NIU) def. Mary Wessman (UND) 6-0, 6-0.
  • Mimi Yunker (UND) def. Michelle Erasmus (NIU) 6-4, 6-2.

Doubles matches

  • Osabuohien/Alvarez (NIU) def. Sprinkel/Yunker (UND) 7-5.
  • Dekkinga/Youel (NIU) def. Lee/Kasilingam (UND) 6-1.
  • Montgomerie/Erasmus (NIU) def. Deming/Brackin (UND) 6-2.

“It feels great to get our first win of the season,” said head coach Tanya Gombera according to an NIU Athletics news release. “We were able to pull out some hard-fought matches, which is always good. The team is now looking forward to playing Lewis this Friday.”
