Pass: SA position much needed, Fail: Homecoming closes lot

By Faith Mellenthin

Pass:

Director of Environmental Affairs, the Student Association’s newly approved cabinet position, is a positive addition that will allow involvement with services maintaining the local environment. Considering this position was created with 14 pre-approved tasks, it would seem like it has been needed for a while. I am equally supportive of the trial idea — depending on how long the trial period is — to allow for improvements to be seen while not hurting the budget. Upcoming winter weather will provide a good test for this position as sustaining the campus will become very important for safety. The campus environment not only needs to look nice, but needs to be functional.

Fail:

Homecoming activities are a favorite for many students; however, it is not so important as to close an entire parking lot. Parking Lot 3, adjacent to the Visual Arts and Music buildings, is a blue permit lot that is closed until the end of Thursday. While I understand there will be alternate options for parkers, I do not think anyone should need to relocate solely for the purpose of Homecoming. Only faculty are allowed to purchase blue permits for a higher cost than students, and many staff commute long distances to teach. It seems unfair to take over the parking lot of a non-athletic building simply to expand Homecoming events.
