NIU is expanding its hall of fame 7 p.m. tonight at the Holmes Student Center, Duke Ellington Ballroom.
The 32nd Induction ceremony will add seven new members of the hall of fame.
New Hall of Famers include:
Lou Jean Moyer- Women’s Volleyball Coach & Women’s Athletics Pioneer
Sandy Menard- Women’s Gymnastics
Charmonique Stallworth- Women’s Basketball
Bob Gregolunas- Football
Michael Turner- Football
Ben Heizer- Wrestling
Scott Owen- Wrestling
The induction is scheduled in conjunction with the Ball State football game tomorrow, Oct. 10, in accordance with NIU tradition.
“[The Hall of Fame is used] to honor our history and tradition,” said athletics director Donna Turner. “We always honor the hall of famers during football weekend.”
The NIU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee decides who will be inducted over the course of 6 to 8 months, according to Turner. The committee opens a public invitation every spring for the public to nominate a candidate. From there, the committee selects who they think should be inducted.
The nominees are then considered by the committee and judged upon the contributions they made to NIU intercollegiate athletics.
Student-athletes and teams must be nominated 10 years after their final year of intercollegiate competition. Coaches, administrators and staff must be nominated 5 years after their leave or retirement from NIU.
