Board of Trustees committee approves $388 million budget

NIU President Doug Baker speaks to the Northern Star Editorial Board on Wednesday. The $388 million budget that was approved Thursday by the Board of Trustees Finance Facilities and Operations committee may be adjusted depending on how much state funding NIU receives at the conclusion of the Illinois budget impasse, according to a Budget Update from Baker.

The Board of Trustees Finance, Facilities and Operations Committee approved a $388 million budget in a Thursday meeting, according to a Budget Update from NIU President Doug Baker.

The budget reflects an 8.6 percent reduction from the $424.5 million Fiscal Year 2015 budget. Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed $29.3 million funding cut could mean NIU’s budget will have to be adjusted, an option that is not off of the table, Baker wrote, according to the Budget Update.

“A reduction of this magnitude will require significant effort on the part of the university to do all the things I mentioned earlier to come into balance,” Baker wrote, according to the Budget Update.

The Board of Trustees will vote on whether or not to approve the proposed budget Sept. 17.
