“Miley and Her Dead Petz,” Miley Cyrus’ surprise album, offers a variety of weird vocal arrangements and colorful beats.

Cyrus has come a long way since her Disney days. The former child starlet was this year’s host on MTV’s Video Music Awards on Aug. 30 and surprised audiences by dropping an album the same day.

“Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz” shows Cyrus in her weirdest, but most comfortable state. The album is freaky, bold and one of a kind, as it strays far away from her former teeny-bop days as Hannah Montana.

The 23-track-long album gives a whole new meaning to the word “weird,” and seems to be more of an excuse for the 22-year-old to experiment and unleash her originality.

While this wild child is known for thinking outside of the box, it seems as if she was under the influence of a few things other than life while producing this eccentric record.

“Twinkle Song,” which introduces the album, takes the listener on an interesting, one-of-a-kind journey into Cyrus’ mind as she sleeps. The song starts off with soft piano beats and Cyrus’ nasally voice, which is quieter than usual until the bridge of the song. Here, she shouts in anger and passion. She repeatedly sings “what does it mean?” to her listeners about a dream she can’t understand.

“Pablow the Blowfish” stands out from the rest of the songs because Cyrus sings emotionally about a fish. She even begins to sniffle and cry before violently slamming the piano at the end of the song. It’s possible this track is about her ex-boyfriend and “The Last Song” co-star, Liam Hemsworth. In one verse, the singer says, “I miss you so bad. On Saturday night, we all went out to eat. But I can never decide, so someone chose sushi. I got soup, and I ordered rice. But watching my friends eat my friends ruined my appetite.”

The last two songs that caught my ear, “Lighter” and “I’m so Drunk,” are more upbeat and relate fairly close to Cyrus’ spunky and colorful Instagram posts. The synth and upbeat tunes remind me of the old Cyrus, and her passion for making music and being a performer seem to shine through in the songs.

And though I am a longtime fan of Miley Cyrus, this album was just plain weird.
