Weekend Guide September 10

Local residents and their families flocked to Kite Fest sundsay to watch and fly kites of all shapes and colors near Annie’s Woods in front of the Engineering building.

Whether you’re working on a difficult project for class or just sitting around, take a break by attending some of these weekend events:

Friday

“Inside Out” will be shown at 8 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. Commons for free, weather permitting. There will be popcorn, beverages and a good amount of Huskies to enjoy the film with. The screening will be moved to the Holmes Student Center, Carl Sandburg Auditorium if weather is inclement.

Second City improv group will perform “Fully Loaded” at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The show will feature classic skits made famous by Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert, and will be sure to bring the laughs. Use the code “family” to get $10 off your ticket at Ticketmaster.com.

Saturday

The Huskies will be fighting for another victory at 2:30 p.m. at the Huskie Stadium. The game is free for students with a OneCard.

As part of the Family Weekend Events, karaoke will be held at the Holmes Student Center, College Grind to see who has the best voice at NIU. The fun begins at 8 p.m. The event is free. May the best vocals win.

Sunday

Enjoy a sunny Sunday afternoon at the 10th annual Kite Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Lucinda Avenue and Kishwaukee Drive. The festival will include a variety of kites, including stunt and dancing kites, as well as food and activities for kids.

Award winning musician Matthew Tembo will perform at 1 p.m. at the House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway. The performance will benefit the Jane Adeny Memorial School of Kenya. There will also be Kenyan items for sale, raffles, crafts for kids and a silent auction. Tickets for Jammin for JAMS are $10 for adults, $5 for students and children under the age of 12 are free.
