Bogenberger lawyer calls for end to pledging in wake of freshman’s death
May 8, 2015
The lawyer for the Bogenberger family called for an end to pledging in the wake of the death of 19-year-old Pike pledge David Bogenberger.
David Bogenberger was pledging to Pi Kappa Alpha when he was found unresponsive Nov. 2, 2012, at the former fraternity house, 1020 W. Hillcrest Drive, with a blood-alcohol content of .351 percent, according to a DeKalb County Coroner’s report. Twenty-two Pike members faced felony or misdemeanor hazing charges in relation to Bogenberger’s death.
Peter Coladarci, the lawyer for Bogenberger’s family, said fraternities and sororities are businesses that seek to make money. He called for Greek for Greek organizations to end pledging and systems that demean members.
The fraternity members faced felony hazing charges in relation to the death of freshman pledge David Bogenberger. Alexander Jandik, James Harvey, Omar Salameh, Patrick Merrill and Steven Libert appeared in court Friday to give pleas.
Along with the five fraternity members, 17 other people were found guilty of misdemeanor charges.
A wrongful death suit against fraternity members filed by the Bogenberger family was dismissed Dec. 11. Coladarci said it is on appeal.
