NIU women’s golf: Huskies head to Ohio for MAC Championship

By Patrick Smith

Women’s golf is getting ready for the MAC Championship 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio.

The Huskies believe they will have a strong showing in the tournament, and they’re optimistic that they will come out and win.

“Absolutely, we are confident,” said head coach Kim Kester. “We have had a couple of weeks to practice, and my girls worked extremely hard and we’re ready to go. … All it takes is three great rounds and if we do that we have a great chance to win.”

The golfers who are traveling to Cincinnati are junior Connie Ellett, freshman Hayley Mortensen, junior Sam Coyne, sophomore Sydney Brickey and sophomore Lena Gautier.

“Yes, I think if we put three good rounds together we definitely will have a chance to win,” Ellett said. “Last year we put two good rounds together, so that allowed us to finish pretty high in the tournament. We will be looking to build off that in this tournament.”

The Huskies won’t know what to expect until tomorrow since they have yet to play at this course.

“No, we haven’t played here yet,” Kester said. “I heard it’s a tight tough course. We’ll find out tomorrow in our first practice round, and we’ll get a feel for it.”
