College Life Hacks: Prepare grilled cheese, chicken and more without a stove

By Walter Douglas

In this addition of College Life Hacks, I’ll show you how to make delicious stoveless versions of grilled cheese, poached chicken and fried eggs. The new age of coffee making food has arrived.

Grilled cheese

I know everyone loves a grilled cheese sandwich on a chilly March night. The only problem is if you are living in a dorm, you don’t have a stove. So once again, my readers, I have found a way to make the perfect grilled cheese only using a coffee maker.

Items you will need:

• Bread (white or wheat)

• Packaged cheese slices

• Coffee maker

• Butter

What to do:

1. Remove the coffee pot from the maker.

2. Turn on the coffee maker and let it warm up for a few minutes.

3. Butter the slices of bread you want to use.

4. Place however many slices of cheese you want between the two pieces of bread.

5. Now place the sandwich on the burner part of the coffee maker.

6. Flip the sandwich until each side has a nice toasted look and the cheese is melted in the middle.

You now have a classic grilled cheese at your disposal. The only thing you will want to do is clean the butter off the coffee maker.

Poached Chicken

You may think I’m stretching it a bit with this one, but never say never, as a famous singer once said. Sometimes you want a fancy dinner that isn’t deliciously prepared ramen or hotdogs or any of the other amazing food I have shared with you. We can now make a full chicken meal. Rejoice, my college comrades.

Items you will need:

• Boneless skinless chicken breast (tender cooks faster)

• Butter

• Water

• Seasoning

• Instant read thermometer

What to do:

1. Add about a centimeter of water into the water section of the coffee maker.

2. Stick the chicken into the coffee pot.

3. Place half a tablespoon of butter on the chicken and also sprinkle the seasoning on top of the chicken.

4. Turn on the coffee maker to allow the water to start filtering into the pot. (Make sure the water isn’t too high. We are poaching, not boiling).

5. Let it cook on that side for about 15 minutes.

6. Flip it onto the other side and let it cook for another 15 minutes.

7. Use an instant read thermometer to check the core temperature of the chicken. The core temperature should reach 160 degrees before serving, according to MarthaStewart.com.

You can now make a real meal your parents will be proud of. You can also make mashed potatoes as a side dish in the coffee maker. Enjoy the fancy chicken my friends.

Fried Eggs

I used to think I had no way of cooking fried eggs in the morning and the dining hall doesn’t specifically make them; however, I have since found a way to make them on a coffee maker.

Items you will need:

• Mini frying pan (very useful for making foods on a coffee maker)

• Spatula

• An egg

• Butter

What to do:

1. Take off the pot from the maker.

2. Let the coffee maker warm up for a few minutes.

3. Place butter on the mini pan, let it melt and spread it around the pan.

4. Crack the egg into the pan and allow it too cook for a few minutes.

5. Once the yolk is as white as you like it, take the egg off with a spatula.

We have done it again everyone. We have successfully continued making five-star foods simply by using a coffee maker. I’m starting to think we don’t even need stoves. Eat well, my college comrades.
