Women’s tennis is off to a 2-0 start under first-year head coach Tanya Gombera.
The Huskies (2-0) beat the Lewis Flyers, 6-1, Friday in Aurora. Sunday, the Huskies eked out a 4-3 win over the Cleveland State Vikings in Cleveland, Ohio.
The 6-1 win over the Flyers pushed the NIU streak of consecutive spring-opening victories to three seasons. Seniors Nelle Youel, Mary Malkin and Arantza De La Torre and freshmen Emily Stefancic and Jennifer Gates picked up singles wins. The Huskies took the doubles point, 2-1.
Against the Vikings, NIU and Cleveland State split the six singles matches. Youel, Malkin and junior Cristina Alvarez picked up wins for the Huskies. The deciding factor was the doubles point, which NIU won, 3-0.
Youel tied the program career combined wins record at 137. De La Torre became the 12th member in program history of the 100 career combined wins club.
