Icy villains suit polar weather
December 1, 2014
When the wind picks up and the temperature drops to deadly levels, my mind drifts to dangerous polar villains who would be right at home.
These are my top three cold villains:
Mr. Freeze
This frozen fiend is a common adversary of Batman. Before becoming a master criminal, Mr. Freeze was a simple molecular biologist who specialized in cryogenics and was named Victor Fries.
Fries fell in love with a woman named Nora, and the two were very happy until Nora grew deathly ill. Fearing for his beloved, Fries froze Nora in a procedure known as cryostasis in an attempt to find a cure. During this time, he began work on a freeze ray. Fries’ corrupt boss, who worked for the mob, caused the ray to explode, killing Nora and covering Fries in chemicals.
Fries’ body is permanently altered, and he has to wear a suit which keeps his body at subzero temperatures. With the help of his freeze gun, he seeks vengeance on those who took part in Nora’s death and often comes into contact with Batman.
You may recognize this villain from his chilling — if not unintentionally hilarious portrayal — by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the so-bad-it’s-good film, “Batman & Robin.”
Ice King
Unlike Mr. Freeze, this master of ice and snow from the animated show, “Adventure Time,” is much more warm-hearted.
Ice King is characterized by his desire to capture and marry princesses from all over the Land of Ooo. Ice King often finds himself at odds with the human hero Finn and his shape-shifting dog, Jake.
Once known as Simon Petrikov, the Ice King found a magic crown that gave him his abilities. The crown drove him mad and he later lost his humanity, driving away his beloved fiancée, Betty.
Ice King is a buffoon by all meaning of the word. His idiocy is in stark contrast of his former sane self. As of now, he is a bumbling ally of Finn, still getting into trouble and causing mischief.
Captain Cold
You can’t mention icy villainy without talking about this popular adversary of the Flash.
Leonard Snart has always been a criminal, even as child. As a young man, he heard about the heroics of the Flash and was disgusted, so Snart decided to find a way to put a stop to him.
Snart created a gun he thought would interfere with Flash’s powers, but he discovered it was capable of completely freezing moisture in the air. Upon this discovery, Snart created the persona of Captain Cold and began committing crimes with his freeze gun.
Captain Cold is a dangerous man who doesn’t hesitate to kill those who wrong him, including those close to the Flash.
