Women’s golf could not stay away from larger numbers during the Louisville Cardinal Cup, where the team placed 11th out of 17 Tuesday.

Louisville Black took the crown, totaling an 888 (303, 290, 295), which was six strokes better than second-place Memphis 894 (301, 293, 300).

“Overall, [it was] an OK tourney for us,” said head coach Kim Kester. “[The] course played tough [Tuesday] for us. [It was a] cooler morning with some wind. [The] field was very strong, so it was nice competing against many top schools.”

The cup did not go the Huskies’ way from the get-go as they finished the first day of play with a 621 (308,313), placing them in 11th.

NIU’s leader after 54 holes was sophomore Sydney Brickey, who shot back-to-back 76 rounds for a 152 after the first day of competition.

Things did not get much better for NIU during the last round, as the team carded a 315 for a 936 total over the two-day tournament.

Brickey continued to be a bright spot for the team, knocking in yet another 76 in the third round to finish the Cardinal Cup with a 228 tied for 22nd out of 98. The sophomore was the only Huskie to post 70s in all three rounds.

“It was nice to see Syd stay consistent,” Kester said.

Seven strokes behind Brickey, junior Connie Ellett took 50th out of 98. Ellett (82, 76, 77, 235) posted in the mid-70s in the final two rounds after struggling in the opening round.

After a top 10 finish at last week’s Redbird Invitational, sophomore Lena Gautier did not have as much success knocking the ball in the hole, carding a 237 (78, 77, 82,), which put her in a tie for 59th.

Sam Coyne, who carded a 243 (77, 79, 87), ended with a high-80s finish after beginning the invitational strong in the first two rounds. The 87 in the third round caused Coyne to finish tied for 75th.

Casey LaBarbera was the only senior who played the team portion of the Cardinal Cup. She finished the tournament with a tie for 90th place (87, 83, 80, 250).

Senior Taylor Ellett, who comepeted as an individual, rounded out NIU, carding a (86, 85, 86, 257).
