Rapid Reaction: NIU 48, Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels 34

By Frank Gogola

What happened: The Huskies (3-0) defeated the Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels (1-2), 48-34, Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

How it happened: The Huskies scored the game’s final 14 points to secure a two-touchdown victory over the Rebels.

Drew Hare connected with Da’Ron Brown for a 54-yard touchdown with 8:23 to play, and Cameron Stingily rushed in to the end zone from 2 yards with 1:56 left to conclude the game’s scoring.

The drive that resulted in Stingily’s touchdown began after Marlon Moore picked off Rebels quarterback Blake Decker in the end zone. The Rebels were driving after NIU went ahead 41-34 and got to the Huskies’ 7-yard line prior to the interception.

The Huskies led 31-12 with 7:06 left in the third quarter before the Rebels scored three touchdowns — with a Tyler Wedel field goal mixed in — to tie the game, 34-34, with 9:18 remaining in the game.

What it means: The Huskies open the season 3-0 for the second straight year and improve to 4-0 all-time against Nevada-Las Vegas. They extend their regular season winning streak to 26 games and their winning streak in true road games to 17 games.

Drew Hare seemed to have a good control of the offense throughout the game, although he did overthrow some wide-open receivers down the field. He was able to scramble for some positive yards on a few occasions when it looked like plays broke down.

The Huskies did play a sloppy third quarter, but a win is a win. The defense got beat on pass plays down the sideline and over the middle. The offense fumbled the ball away, which led to a Rebels touchdown. The special teams unit was tagged for a roughing the kicker call, giving the Rebels a first down, which ultimately resulted in a touchdown.

Three stars:

3. Senior wide receiver Da’Ron Brown: Six receptions for 138 yards and one touchdown (game-winning touchdown)

2. Redshirt senior tailback Cameron Stingily: 17 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns

1. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Drew Hare: 18-of-28 for 285 yards and three touchdowns; 14 rushes for 74 yards and one touchdown

Up next: The Huskies take on the Arkansas Razorbacks (2-1) 6 p.m. Saturday at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark. The game will be televised on ESPNU. The Huskies’ defense will have its hands full with the Razorbacks’ ground game, which ran for 438 yards and seven touchdowns in a 49-28 win over Texas Tech Saturday.
