DeKalb | Co-ed dance fraternity Delta Phi Delta raised awareness and money for suicide prevention at its Dance for Your Life event Tuesday in the Martin Luther King Jr. Commons.

Delta Phi Delta members are students of all majors who share a passion for dance.

“Because I’m a business major, I knew I wouldn’t be dancing a lot,” said Jevonte Marshall, Delta Phi Delta member and junior OMIS major. “I wanted some kind of tie to dance, and when I first got to college I really identified with [the other members] because we’re all dancers, but we’re still students.”

The fraternity raised more than $140 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said Bernadette Chatman, Delta Phi Delta member and junior special education major. Music was played while members danced and spoke to people walking by about their cause.

The members want to “let everybody know that suicide awareness is an important thing,” said La’Vannah Roberson, Delta Phi Delta president and senior communication major. “So we’re grabbing attention by using our talent.”

The fraternity will host more events to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, such as a walk for suicide awareness Sept. 30 in the MLK Commons.

“This is our very first year of doing our philanthropy for the AFSP,” Chatman said. “So today is the Dance for Your Life event, and we’ll be having a lot of other events for the rest of the year.”
